RESIDENCY IN SWITZERLAND
PROJECT “SUSTAINABLE MOUNTAIN ART”
OPEN CALL FOR SOUTH AFRICAN PHOTOGRAPHERS
For the project SMArt www.sustainablemountainart.ch in Switzerland we are looking for a South African photographer who is interested and avilable to work for three months between July and October 2016 with one of the following themes: Migration, Water-management, Climate- changing, food security.
2. EXPECTATIONS and BENEFITS
The artist is hosted in a cultural residence that offers him a workspace, facilitates his stay, and organizes actions to promote his work (exhibitions, conferences, meetings).
The Department of Culture of Canton Graubünden and the host residence make available their expertise and networks to promote the work of the artist in Switzerland.
The work done during the stay in Switzerland will also be valorised in the country of origin by cultural partner in South Africa.
The cost of travel and accommodation in Switzerland are covered. The artist will also receive a per diem to cover the costs during his stay.
During his residency the artist will produce an artistic work on the theme of global challenges of mountain regions (climate change, water management, migration, food security) and solutions developed to address these challenges.
During his stay the artist will participate in cultural mediation activities organized in collaboration with the host residence.
At his return, the artist will participate in cultural mediation activities organized in collaboration with the cultural partner.
GENERAL CRITERIA OF PROFESSIONALISM
Remunerated professional experience in the field of photography or video.
Recognition by actors of photography or video, at least at the local level (such as institutions with
cultural programmes, professionals in the field and other artists, general and specialized media,
recognized juries of competitions, scholarship, etc.).
An academic or professional degree in the field of photography, film or video is an advantage.
SPECIFIC CRITERIA OF SMART PROGRAMME
Availability to stay in Switzerland for a three months period. Interest in mountain regions and their global challenges (climate change, water management, migration, food security), demonstrated in an artistic production, respectively any other commitment to mountainous regions and their challenges. Experience in meetings and exchange with the public about the work of the artist in the context of cultural mediation actions. Fluency in German or English. Permanent residence in South Africa or Africa originally and physical fitness.
CONTENT FOR THE APPLICATION
The applications must contain the following information for an evaluation of the artist, his relevance to the SMART programme, his experience, his level of professionalism, and his cultural link: Letter of intention; Artistic career; Presentation of artistic works; References and press articles. The artist must be physically fit for walking in the mountains.
Jury and selection process:
A first selection of candidates is made by the cultural partner in the country of origin, which submits at least 15 candidates to a jury of 5 experts in Switzerland, which takes the final decision. The final selection is planed in May 2016.
